CORE Schools take part in BPS Future Business Walk
On Wednesday 20th February, students from our schools Arena Academy, Central Academy, Jewellery Quarter Academy and Rockwood Academy took part in the first Business Professional Services (BPS) Birmingham Business Walk, organised by BPS’s Future Engage committee.
Students from Year 8, 9, and 10 took the opportunity to visit a variety of organisations in Birmingham’s business professional and financial services sector as part of CORE Education Trust’s Opportunity Days initiative. The walk presented students with the opportunity to experience workplaces in real-time, meeting a variety of employees, and engaging in activities.
The day’s activities began at accountancy and business advisory firm BDO, where the students were tasked with work on profit and loss accounts. The students were given data sheets and challenged to work out the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats based on the outcome of their findings.
Next, the students visited international law firm Trowers & Hamlins Birmingham office. The students were tasked with identifying an employee’s job role based on their picture in an effort to highlight the importance of perception and diversity as well as the importance of the firm’s different departments in ensuring their success.
The walk’s final session was a visit to audit, accountancy and advisory firm Mazars. Students engaged in small groups with a variety of Mazars employees, all from different backgrounds, who discussed their values, their journey to employment at Mazars, and the importance of education. They highlighted to the students the key business skills they need to develop and demonstrate moving forward as well as alternative paths into careers in the business professional and financial services sector such as apprenticeships.
It is our mission to provide children with a high-quality educational experience realised through a collective commitment to our four CORE values: Collaboration, Opportunity, Respect and Excellence. We are committed to providing all of our children with access to a wide range of cultural experiences and opportunities to ensure the development of character and communication. Working with organisations such as BPS Birmingham Future and its Engage committee to bring opportunities such as the business walk to our students is a vital part of our mission.
Dan Goddard, Solicitor at Trowers & Hamlins LLP and BPS Future Engage member said:
“The BPS Future Engage committee is delighted to have supported CORE Education Trust with the first of several BPS Business Walks. Our sessions are intended to break down barriers and remove stereotypes for students wishing to pursue a career within professional services. With one of CORE’s key values being ‘opportunity’ for students, it is important that we continue to link the Birmingham professional services market with local education providers. Thank you to CORE for allowing us to support their development programme and special thanks again to Mazars and BDO for their support.”
We look forward to seeing what the next CORE opportunity day brings.
