Rockwood Academy girls celebrate International Women’s Day with STEM Activities
On Friday 8th March 2019, female science students from Rockwood Academy took part in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) focused workshops at different institutions across Birmingham to celebrate International Women’s Day, which coincided with the start of British Science Week 2019.
Girls from Year 7-10 visited Sandwell Academy, where they took part in a series of scientific experiments, woodwork workshops and driving simulations. Rockwood Academy students were using their CORE values of collaboration and opportunity in their keen participation in the day’s activities.
Year 9 Pastoral Manager, Ms S. Walker said: “A fantastic experience for our young girls, I am confident this will inspire them to go onto do great things in life.”
Rockwood Academy student Safah said: “It was a great experience because I had a chance to look at different elements of engineering.”
Year 10 girls attended an Engineering day hosted by Bourneville College. Activities during the day included workshops on infrastructure and robot design as well as panel discussions on routes into engineering careers. Students exercised their value of Collaboration to construct towers during the infrastructure design activities. Rockwood Academy’s girls took the opportunity to celebrate their gender and develop their identity whilst discovering new scientific-focused passions.
Rockwood Academy student Zainub said: “I was really surprised by the lack of women in senior roles within Engineering. Today has taught me a lot about the value women can add to the sector. I particularly enjoyed the robotics workshops”.
Rockwood Academy’s Science Department is dedicated to supporting their students in continuing to advocate for changes in Science that go beyond acknowledging the gender gaps and work towards equality. This is highlighted by Rockwood’s integration of interactive and practical elements of STEM subjects into their curriculum, which has seen a rise in the number of Rockwood Academy girls applying for Science and Maths courses at A-Level across post-16 providers.
